Russell 3000 Best and Worst Performing Stocks During July

Although the S&P 500 was up a little more than 1% during the month of July, a lot of stocks made some big moves.  The tables below highlight the stocks in the Russell 3000 that did the best and worst during the month.  As shown, all of the stocks had advances or declines of at least 30%.

The top performing stock of the month was AuthenTec (AUTH), which had a takeover offer from Apple (AAPL) late in the month causing the stock to rally 94%!  Behind AUTH, Brightpoint (CELL), GeoEye (GEOY), and Alnylam Pharma (ALNY) all saw gains of more than 60% during the month.  Not all of this month's best performers were low priced stocks either.  Shares of AMERIGROUP (AGP) started the month in the mid 60s and finished the month just under $90.

On the downside, shares of A123 Systems (AONE) dropped more than 65% during the month, but there were also five other stocks that saw declines of more than 50%.  Talk about a summer swoon.  Another notable aspect of the list below is the presence of for profit education stocks.  Of the 25 names highlighted below, four of them (BPI, EDMC, DV, and ESI) come from that group and saw declines ranging from 36% to 58%.  Back to school season can't come soon enough for these stocks.
