S&P 500 Sector Breadth Levels

Today's rally pushed the S&P 500 back above its 50-day moving average.  Below we highlight the percentage of stocks within the entire index and within the ten S&P 500 sectors that are currently trading above their 50-days.  As shown, 52% of S&P 500 stocks are currently above their 50-days, which suggests that breadth is about inline with where the index itself is trading.

Unfortunately, key cyclical sectors like Technology, Financials, Industrials and Energy still have less than 50% of their stocks above their 50-days.  Consumer Discretionary and Materials are the two cyclical sectors with readings above 50%.

The defensives still have the highest breadth readings, with Utilities at the top of the list at a whopping 97%.
