S&P Short Interest Increases

Short interest figures for the month of May were released after the close yesterday.  Given the general weakness in the equity market in recent weeks, it should not come as too much of a surprise that short interest has risen.  For the S&P 1500 as a whole, the average stock in the index now has 6.6% of its float sold short, which is up from 5.90% at the end of March (just as the market was peaking).  Even after the recent increase, however, short interest is still below its one-year high of 6.9% from last Summer, and it's nowhere near the levels we saw just four years ago.
