Strategist Year-End S&P 500 Price Targets
Monday, June 6, 2011 at 03:41PM Below we highlight the most recent year-end S&P 500 price targets for the major Wall Street equity strategists. As shown below, just two strategists currently have year-end targets that are below the actual level of the S&P 500 at the moment. Morgan Stanley is looking for a year-end S&P 500 level of 1,238, while Credit Suisse is looking for 1,275. On the bullish side, Deutsche Bank remains above and beyond any other firm with its price target of 1,550.

Below is a chart of the S&P 500 along with the average year-end strategist price target as the year has gone on. As shown, while the market has really taken a downturn in recent weeks, strategists have yet to lower their targets. Eventually the targets will drop if the market continues to perform poorly, but for now, strategists as a whole are holding tight with their bullish year-end prognostications.

The graph I'd like to see is the predicted/actual ratio (or difference, whichever is clearer) for each of these institutions, over the last 10+ years. That might help indicate whether or not we should pay any attention to what these people say...
What would be interesting is a graph like that going back 10-20 yr instead of 6 mo.
