What to Expect Next Week

Adios 2011, hello 2012.  Below we highlight the S&P 500's change over the first five trading days of every year in the index's history (going back to 1928).

Since 1928, the S&P 500 has averaged a very nice gain of 0.61% in the first week of the year with positive returns 65% of the time.  This is 47 basis points better than the average change of 0.14% for all 5-day periods since 1928.

Over the last 50 and 20 years, the index has averaged smaller gains of 0.27% and 0.30% respectively, but over the last 10 years, the average moves back up to 0.63%.  In each of the last three years, the S&P has posted gains in the first week of trading.
