Dow 30 Winning and Losing Streaks
Thursday, May 28, 2009 at 01:41PM Every day after the close, we post our "Stock Odds" report on the Bespoke Premium website. This report provides a run-down of current index and sector trends, along with the winning and losing streaks for the 30 Dow members. It also highlights stocks in the Russell 1,000 that currently have the longest number of consecutive up or down days, as well as the stocks that had the biggest one-day gains and losses. What's unique about the report is that we look at all historical winning and losing streaks of the same length and magnitude and show what typically has happened on the next day.
As an example, below we highlight the current winning or losing streaks for the 30 Dow stocks. Most stocks are just up one day in a row since we had a big down day yesterday and a big up day today. Citi (C), Home Depot (HD), and General Motors (GM) are the only stocks in the index that were down yesterday and today. The most interesting stock is Merck (MRK). MRK has now been up 8 days in a row, which is a very long winning streak for a Dow stock. Over the last five years, MRK has only had one other 8-day winning streak, and it went up on day 9 as well (as highlighted by the 100% "odds" of being up the next day). To keep track of these winning and losing streaks and to find interesting short term trade ideas based on them, you can receive the "Stock Odds" report daily by becoming a Bespoke Premium member.
